Mahatma Gandhi : A Life Sketch

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi more commonly known  as "Mahatma Gandhi" was born in Porbandar,(also known as Sudampuri) Gujarat, in North West India, on 2 October 1869. His father was the Chief Minister of Porbandar State. His mother Putlibai, who was from a Pranami Vaishnava family, she was fourth  wife of Karamchand's, the first-three wives having evidently died in childbirth. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had two brothers and one sister. Mohandas was the youngest one of them. He studied initially at an elementary school in Porbandar and then at primary and high school in Rajkot, one of the important cities of Gujarat, and he was married at the age of thirteen, when he still in high school, to Kasturbai who was of the same age (thirteen), and had four sons named Harilal, Ramdas, Manilal and Devdas. Gandhiji was studying at Samaldas Collage in Bhavnagar, when his father was died. His father died in 1885, and that time Gandhiji travelled to London, England. He studied Law and Jurisprudence and he sailed to London on September 4, 1888 at the age of 18. He got deeply interested in vegetariamism and study of different religions and cultures, and he also joined the Vegetarian Society, was elected to its executive committee. He passed his examinationand was called to bar in June 10, 1891 and then left London for India, while when he was in London his mother was died. After this Gandhiji returned to Rajkot to make a modest living drafting petitions, but he was forced to stop when he ran foul of a British Officer. In 1893, Gandhiji accepted a year long contract from Dada Abdulla & Co. an Indian firm, to a post in the Colony of Natal, South Africa a part of the British Empire. He united the settled in South Africa of different communities, languages, religions and cultures, and founded Natal Indian Congress in 1893. In 1915, Gandhiji returned to India permanently, as advised by Gopal Krishna Gokhale and he joined the Indian National Congress. When Gandhiji returned from South Afirca he had established his Ashram at Kochrab near Ahmedabad. His first Satyagraha in India was at Champaran, Bihar and Gujarat in 1917. In Champaran, he taught the poor and illiterate people the principles of Satyagraha. Gandhiji took the administration by surprise and won concessions from the authorities.

On January 26, 1930 was celebrated as Indain Independence Day by the Indian National Congress meeting in Lahore. This day was commemorated by almost every other Indain organisation. Gandhiji then launched a new Satyagraha against the tax on salt in March, 1930. He also arrested on May 4, within weeks thousand of men and women were imprisoned, challenging the authority of the colonial rulers.
On 30th January 1948, Gandhiji on his way to the prayer meeting at Birla House, New Delhi fell to the bullets fired by Nathuram Vinayank Godes. As observed by Louis Fischer, Millions in all countries mourned Gandhiji Death as a personal loss. They did not quite know why, they did not quite know what he stood for, But he was 'a good man' and good men are rare.

In Aaakhon se sada maa ko dekhu,
In kano se maa ko sunu,
Ye haat maa ke charno ki dhul ko sada chue,
Ye paaon sada maa ke darbar ko hi jaye,
Sada maa ka beta bana rahu,

Chand ki chandani, Basant ki bahar.
Phoolo ki khushbu, Apno ka pyar.

Sada khush rahe aap aur apka Parivar.
